A presentation for Congregation Ahavas Achim in Keene, New Hampshire:
Environmental issues are the crucial challenge of the twenty-first century. Climate disruption, species extinctions, and environmental toxicities impact every planetary community. These challenges are also crucial to how we think about equity, diversity, and civic participation. We will not solve them only with political, cultural, and environmental solutions. We also must come to grips with the ethical and spiritual questions. Abraham Joshua Heschel, one of the deepest Jewish thinkers of the twentieth century, addressed these questions in two of his seminal works—Man is Not Alone and God in Search of Man.
For this gathering, I will clarify the depth of the environmental challenge, and then introduce how Heschel’s work provides spiritual guidance.
