Memory Forever Unfolding

Childhood Memories

Please allow me to spend some time dwelling in memory and reflection. I’d like you to journey with me to the 1950’s. Follow me to a small apartment in Fresh Meadows, Queens, New York. My world between the ages of three and five was a middle class, brick housing complex, a typical mid-century, post-war apartment building. I have several very dim but residing memories of the playground and my bedroom. I spent hours on the swings, singing songs at the top of my lungs, experiencing freedom as a small child might perceive it. But what I remember most are some of the books I read. I taught myself how to read and as early as three years old I could follow simple books. By the time I was five, I could read just about any children’s book. That was my other source of freedom. Now, over six decades later, two of those books stand out. I’d like to tell you about them. Their deeper meaning was slowly revealed during the course of my lifetime. In those early years they were an important component of how I came to know the world.

There are two influential books that I would like to share with you —The Golden Guide to the Stars, and Harold and the Purple Crayon.

 

Golden Guide to the Stars

One Sunday my parents took me to the Hayden Planetarium in New York City. I was awestruck at the immensity of the virtual cosmos. It was here that I first experienced wonder in a palpable way —the night sky, the planets, and the vast expanse of outer space. I sat in the circular auditorium gazing at the virtual heavens. What a bonanza for a young imagination. Outer space appeared accessible, promising, and truly wonderful. We visited the planetarium gift shop and my parents allowed me a souvenir. I asked for Herbert Zim’s Golden Guide to the Stars. I savored that book for years to come. I didn’t understand all of the text in the book. Still, it took me on magnificent journeys throughout the solar system, illustrating comets, imaginary planetary landscapes, moons, stars, and asteroids. I was enamored with the two page spread depicting a beam of light passing through a prism, resulting in the colorful spectrum. In my mind’s eye I can still see many of the book’s illustrations. In those early years I first came to know the world by using my imagination to visit outer space and to gain a perspective on the earth as a planetary body. This was my first lesson in scale.

There was a dark side, too, revealing the limits of my insufficient capacity for understanding. Periodically I would have terrifying nightmares. I can’t recall anything substantive about them. Yet I can still conjure the deeply unsettled feelings. The dreams had to do with inexplicable proportionality. I was outrageously small or large in relationship to my space. In retrospect, I was swimming in a weightless dimensionality, unable to find my bearings, terrified by feeling disembodied, befuddled by a sensational surreality beyond my experience or any rational explanation that would make sense to a five year old. It was my first encounter with the void. The world (and the universe) were both wonderful and inexplicably daunting, perhaps, too, forever unknowable.

The Golden Guide to the Stars unleashed my imagination. I knew that my mind (and my dreams) could wander far and wide. Books were the inspiration that could launch countless journeys. As a young child, they allowed me to expand the territory of imaginative exploration. I was enamored at the prospects. To think that a small book could have so much power!

All explorers need a guide. It’s easy to wander off the path, or to encounter landscapes, people, animals, or situations that you aren’t quite ready for. A five year old traveler needs guides, too, especially when the journey is propelled by an active imagination. I couldn’t assimilate all that I was learning. I had many irrational fears. After reading through The Golden Guide to the Weather, I was worried that a harmless cumulus cloud on a warm summer day could become a dangerous thunderstorm. I distrusted tunnels and elevators, unable to see where I was going. I was frightened of speed and loud noises.

I found a book that would give me confidence. It helped me confront my fears by demonstrating that I had the power to construct, coordinate, and control my expanding imaginative reality. You see, Harold had this magic crayon.

He used the crayon to draw the landscape of his evening escapades. At the start of his adventure he required a moon for light, a path to walk on, a tree to explore, and some apples to eat. He drew a dragon to protect the apples, but it was so frightening that the hand holding the crayon began to shake. He inadvertently drew ocean waves and fell into the water. Harold improvised. He drew a boat and took a sail guided by the light of the ubiquitous half moon. Other adventures follow, including a picnic with a “hungry moose and a deserving porcupine,” a climb up a mountain to get a better view, falling off the mountain and constructing a balloon in the midst of his free fall, and finally as he begins to tire, a search for his home and bedroom. He draws a house and then an entire city neighborhood with many tall buildings and countless windows. As he gets increasingly worried, he has a brilliant insight. He remembers the moon shining in his bedroom window. So if he can draw his bed and the window with the moon shining through, then he can find his way home. He does so and falls off to sleep.

Harold and the Purple Crayon is one of the most adored children’s books of the twentieth century. It has sold over two million copies. It has never gone out of print. There are six other Harold books, multiple animations, and a thirteen episode HBO series. There’s even curriculum for how to use the book as a means to teach young children philosophy. Harold is not only popular, but the lessons of his journey are relevant for children and adults alike.

Here’s why I remember it so vividly. Harold is seeking adventure and discovery. He does so through his fertile imagination. He has no map. His experiences are spontaneous, wonderful, and scary. They lead to predicaments. He regains his balance through improvisational thinking, using the crayon to create structures that emerge from the tribulations of his imagination. He is always learning something new. And then, when he is fatigued and overwhelmed, he searches for his home place. He arrives home by drawing an image of what’s comfortable and familiar.

I first read Harold and the Purple Crayon the year it was published (1955). I was five years old. It was one of my first lessons in how to explore the world. Over the course of a lifetime, the substance of the adventures have changed considerably. Yet the sense of insecurity and risk, the waves of confidence and doubt, the challenges of uncertainty, the uses of creativity and imagination, the urge to discover new ideas, the necessity of rethinking what you thought you knew, the inevitability of mistakes, and the ability to flow with circumstances— these are not only the challenges of a lifetime, but as we’ll see later in this book, the foundations of environmental learning.

Harold’s culminating lesson is the celebration of a secure home place. He desires mobility, and with mobility he encounters adventures and unpredictability, but he also knows that he can locate and reconstruct his way home. Home place (however it is defined) is a conceptual ballast that supports transience, impermanence, exploration, discovery, and allows the creative imagination to flourish.

When you dwell in memory, you also encounter dark shadows, disturbing images that deeply impact how you come to know the world. One memory starts as a frolic and ends as a headache. In 1956 we moved to a suburban community on the south shore of Long Island. Our development was essentially built on a wetland that drained into a series of beaches bordering the Atlantic Ocean. During the summer months there were plenty of mosquitoes. The solution? Spray DDT! A man would come in a small jeep and dispense a cloud of chemicals resembling a misty fog. We called him “the fog man.” I remember running through “the fog,” delighted that I had access to the same clouds I observed in the sky. I soon realized that these fog adventures would typically result in a headache, and from then on I stayed away. In my adult years, as a thirty-nine year old, and then more recently, I’ve had cancerous but encapsulated tumors removed from my body. I often wonder whether the “fog man” seeded those mutations.

Around the same time, The United States and the Soviet Union were engaged in a feverish and insane experiment of above ground nuclear testing. You could watch images of mushroom clouds while perusing the evening news. In school, we would have drills to protect us in case of air raids. The teacher instructed us to put our heads down on our desks. I was only six years old. But it wasn’t hard to figure out that if the Russians dropped an A-bomb on New York City, this was feeble protection.

What lessons emerged? First, I experienced cognitive dissonance, the awareness of conflicting possibilities. My mind was twisted by the prospect of a misty fog leading to poisonous headaches. How could the prospect of delight prove to be delusional? I longed to explore the clouds that were drifting on the ground. But I didn’t realize they were a human-made gas, linked to a toxic chemical that would soon be banned. This never dampened my enthusiasm for exploring landscapes and weather, but it did teach me about prudent vigilance. This theme reemerged in my professional work decades later as a crucial existential and educational challenge—how to engage a sense of wonder at exploring the biosphere when you simultaneously learn about threats to biodiversity, climate change, and species extinctions.

Second, I learned that authorities were perfectly capable of misleading people. Did my teacher really think that putting my head down on the desk would protect me from a nuclear explosion? Why did we have such weapons when their use sparked mutually assured destruction? I didn’t ask such specific questions until later in childhood, but my sense of fear was surely enhanced. And more importantly, I began to question the wisdom of adult decisions.

Knowledge, I learned, was a double-edged sword. It could fuel my imagination and also scare the living daylights out of me. This mirrored a dual message of the 1950’s, my first exposure to a life-long conceptual incongruity. Check out appliance, television, or automobile advertisements of the 1950’s. They promise the glorious prospects of unbounded affluence, showcasing shiny and sparkly consumer goods. Yet newspaper headlines and newscasts discussed the Cold War while government officials recommended that ordinary citizens build bomb shelters. Of course its easy to dramatize this in retrospect, but these memories remain vivid, and they informed the hopes and fears, the seductions and aspirations, and the images of success and failure that are still prevalent six decades later.

Developmental Interludes

I’ll conclude this brief snapshot of vivid learning memories for now, although I would also like to stress that I could cite dozens of additional incidents and memories. Some of those reflections will emerge later in this book. I call these passages developmental interludes. They are dynamic approaches to lifecycle learning. It’s instructive, regardless of your age, to trace how you learn through a lifetime, to consider what’s changed, to trace integrating themes that continue through the stages of your lifecycle, and to observe that the essence of how you learn is both perennial and adaptive. I use the term “developmental” to stress that at different stages of conceptual, cognitive, and emotional maturity we have perspectives that reflect the time, age, and place of our situation.

I believe there are recurrent themes during the course of a lifetime —interests, ideas, dilemmas, and ways of perceiving the world that form your personal narrative. If you take the time to meditate and reflect on different stages of your own development, these narrative themes become more clear. You gain perspective on how your actions have a broader context, how they recreate themselves as learning opportunities, how your life is, in fact, a cycle of possibilities, unfolding in dynamic and interesting ways, offering unique insights and wisdom.

Of course your body and mind change with each breath and every thought moment. You recycle cells and ideas alike. However, there are narratives that tell the story of your life, that integrate coherent themes by coordinating and interpreting the process of developmental change. In this book, I am asking you to look carefully at those themes. They are a pathway towards a better understanding of the learning habits of a lifetime. As you find deeper meaning in those memories and reflections, you will better understand how you come to know the world, in a way that is personal and meaningful.

I will suggest, too, that revealing these narratives should be a collaborative effort. What are the ways our shared experiences are similar and different? This is an educational plea for the necessity of both multigenerational and multicultural exposure. You can’t know the world just by knowing yourself. Indeed, you come to know yourself by knowing others, and that’s when deep learning happens. That is the essence of lifelong learning. By capturing my own developmental interludes, I hope to trigger some of yours.

This reflects my hands-on educational philosophy as well as the writing strategy of this book. The most interesting learning opportunities unfold from your personal experiences, especially when they are shared with others. When your personal narrative is curated with purpose, and then melded with ecological observations, synthesized through interpretation, and organized by analysis and theory, your learning expands, your capabilities flourish. Developmental interludes help you expand your sense of self. They prepare you to engage in profound environmental learning.

Perennial Learning

Harold and the Purple Crayon is just as meaningful today as it was in 1955. Yet we should be aware, too, that in these times, Harold is as likely to take his journey on an iPad app or a You Tube Video. Harold’s adventures are perennial because they tap into challenges that face every generation, regardless of the medium.

The human imagination finds many way to travel through space and time, to experiment with scale, perception, and perspective. Artists, visionaries, mystics, and scientists use the imagination to experiment with scale, to expand awareness, and to explore and discover the world. Harold just happened to use a purple crayon. It could have been a musical instrument, the written word, a form of dance, a microscope, a telescope, or a sextant. These are educational mediums. Whether they are used for pleasure, performance, measurement, or experimentation, they tap into the creative capacity, stirring the imagination, generating insight, and stimulating emotional responses.

You may not be conceptually ready for what you encounter. And you may not be able to assimilate what you learn. Memory and the imagination reverberate throughout your awareness, allowing you to construct multiple realities, playing out dynamic scenarios that may

never come to pass. The imagination can visit realms that are both wonderful and terrifying. That’s why we require guidance, collaboration, and mentorship, why learning is a multigenerational activity, and we pass ideas on from one generation to the next. This happens by virtue of the stories we tell each other, whether around a campfire, at a family gathering, in a classroom, or through a magnificent book. Learning is perennial when it taps into wisdom that penetrates many generations. Its likely that the dilemmas you face, the questions you have, and your hopes and aspirations connect you to other people and cultures, both through the ages and over the course of a lifetime.

Perennial learning is awareness of the wisdom of the ages. Yet the context and milieu of environmental learning is always changing. For example, promising new technologies easily take over our lives, and in so doing they alter what we observe and how we perceive. Our social relationships are powerful forces that expose us to waves of trends, styles, and implicit conformities. How do we find a path through the changing flows and circumstances of our social and technological encounters?

Adaptive Learning

The latest research in evolutionary biology and cognitive neuroscience is complex, emergent, and often controversial. However, a tentative consensus suggests there is a somatic and evolutionary substrate that informs sensory perception, structures our imaginative capacities, and enables us to form concepts and ideas. Exciting new research explores the remarkable plasticity of the brain in relationship to cultural evolution. Eva Jablonski and Marion J. Lamb (Evolution in Four Dimensions) propose an evolutionary synthesis that describes four inheritance systems—genetic, epigenetic, behavioral, and symbolic. That means that there are many pathways for transmitting information (and hence knowledge) between and within generations. Kevin Laland’s work as outlined in Darwin’s Unfinished Symphony suggests that the most important contributing factor to the rise of human culture is our capacity for social learning. What happens when you consider the educational implications of this proliferating research? Surely it means we must pay attention to understanding the adaptive qualities of active minds.

I know that my granddaughter finds Harold’s purple crayon as engaging as I did. And just as I used to love to run on the playground, I take pleasure in admiring her great joy at kinetic learning—climbing on whatever surfaces she can, while challenging me to races I can no longer come close to winning. I also marvel at her ability to sit with a computer tablet, and make her way around the interface entirely on her own. Just as I learned to read with minimal supervision, she can navigate computers through trial and error, by observing others, and by just figuring it out.

My grandparents grew up in an era when there were no airplanes (invented in 1903) and just a few automobiles (invented in 1885). My granddaughter watches videos on a tablet. Born in 1950, I stand in the middle of four generations, a child of the mid-twentieth century, a transitional era, that predates the so-called digital age. Like Joe Walsh, I’m an analog man, too, but I am intrigued and thrilled at the learning possibilities of the digital realm. Yet I know that despite my familiarity with computers and the Internet, and all of the ways that I am deeply enmeshed in the digital age, my exposure came well into adulthood. My granddaughter has always known tablets and the Internet, and that changes everything.

I do not intend to levy judgment. I prefer to reveal the depth of my unknowing as to the educational implications of how quickly learning environments change. The technology proceeds apace. We adapt and learn together. As Jablonski, Lamb, and Laland, among many other scholars point out, there are many vectors of information transmission and social learning, and we cannot pretend to understand the various ways they unfold.

Therefore, it is undoubtedly presumptuous to write a book about the future of environmental learning. The ecological and evolutionary dynamics of rapid global environmental change are complicated enough. Superimpose the rapidity of cultural shifts, the transmission of information, the perceptual and sensory impact of advanced technology—the interpenetration of memes, dreams, and machines— and we realize how much there is to absorb.

Our challenge is to consider the necessity of adaptive learning, the ability to assimilate, interpret, and synthesize the rapidly changing circumstances of our planetary condition. You work with what you have while attempting to anticipate what comes next. You learn to improvise, to confront uncertainty, to cultivate open-mindedness, the ability to listen well, and to sprinkle this formula with a healthy dose of humility.

And then you look up at the sky and see the same constellations that your ancestors did. Or you take a walk in the woods and marvel that the lichen growing on the trees and rocks have an ancient lineage stretching into the deep time of Earth history, acknowledging that some Arctic lichen live for 8,600 years. Or that the atoms in your body were formed when a distant star exploded in a past so remote you can barely conceive it.

Yes, its necessary to consider how the changing milieu of contemporary life requires adaptive considerations in educational settings. But remember, too, that an ancient book like the I Ching, is a “book of changes” and it’s timeless advice reflects on the inevitability of change in all human endeavors.

Depending on your age, your culture, your background, your values, and your interests, there are many paths to environmental learning. This includes varieties of developmental sequences, cognitive abilities, and multiple intelligences. Let’s keep this in mind as we proceed. Your path is an educational narrative, one strand in a collective narrative that yields more generalized insights. The very best educational approaches weave individual and collective experience, while calling attention to what’s perennial and adaptive.

When I was twenty-three years old (1973), like many young people that age, I had Wanderlust. I had just finished a Masters program in history in which I spent countless hours reading and writing. My mind was surely challenged but I felt hemmed in and claustrophobic, not wanting to spend my twenties in libraries. Through a series of fortunate inquiries and connections I secured passage on a coal freighter traveling from Norfolk, Virginia, to Taranto, Italy. I was thrilled for this opportunity. Tired from my cloistered experience I brought no reading material with me, only my guitar and pack.

Upon arriving at the ship, I met the captain. I was under the impression that I would be put to work but he said that wasn’t necessary. This was a ten day voyage. I realized there would be nothing for me to do except play the guitar and gaze at the ocean. I had a few hours before the freighter departed. I hitched a ride to downtown Norfolk searching for a bookstore. All I could find was a pornographic book shop but in the back they had a small shelf of literary books. I grabbed The Glass Bead Game by Hermann Hesse and John Blofeld’s sparse translation of the I Ching.

During the first evening, I sat in my cabin and went through the I Ching coin throwing procedure. I asked whether this voyage was the right path for this phase of my life. My hexagram was number 26, translated by Blofeld as “The Great Nourisher.” The first lines read, “The Great Nourisher favors righteous persistence. Good fortune results from not eating at home. It is a favorable time for crossing the great river (sea).” This was one of the first great independent adventures (voyages) of my life. The seemingly random process of selecting a hexagram was remarkably reaffirming.

Thirty-three years later I was offered the presidency of Unity College in Maine. This would be another challenging adventure, taking on the leadership of a small university. I’ve always saved the I Ching for new challenges and I only use the random process when I want to shake up my otherwise rational decision-making approach. As I was preparing for what be a major life change, I once again threw the coins to select a hexagram. I used a different, more comprehensive translation, this one by Jack Balkin, a constitutional law professor at Yale University. His approach is very much geared towards issues of leadership, as are many of the I Ching translations. Remarkably, I arrived at the same hexagram, named in this translation, “Great Accumulation.” The Judgment section of the text reads “Cultivating a determined and steadfast character is essential, because if you wish to remain at the height of your powers you will need to hone your skills continually and renew yourself daily.....good fortune will come from working for the public good rather than for private advantage. Devote yourself to the perfection of your talents and to the achievement of something beyond your narrow self-interest, and you will have both the power and the vision to achieve great things, symbolized by crossing the great river.”

I have a modest collection of I Ching translations. And my knowledge of the work is at best equally modest. It was written many, many generations ago, sifted through Confucian, Taoist, and Buddhist minds, and then filtered through Western scholars from different intellectual traditions. The Yin Yang lines yield archetypal nature- derived trigrams that recombine as sixty-four hexagrams, interpreted through observations of the natural world, human behavior, and the nuances of governance and leadership. It is arguably one of the most enduring, intriguing, and mysterious books to emerge from human culture. When I study the book, I feel as if I’m getting access to an intellectual mixture of the world’s great wisdom traditions, organized around a primordial, archetypal knowledge system.

The ten day voyage was slow and steady. For virtually the entire trip, there were no human signs other than the daily doings of the crew. I played my guitar and gazed at the ocean. For the first nine days I contemplated sea and sky, remarking on the absence of human signatures. A half day out from the Straits of Gibraltar, ships appeared. The closer we got, the more ships I saw, as if they were all pulled by a magnet through a funnel. Finally, the sea traffic was dynamic. There were hundreds of boats of all conceivable shapes and sizes, carrying the world’s cargo through a narrow passage into the Mediterranean Sea. I wondered what it might have been like only five centuries earlier to sail in the opposite direction, westward through the passage into what was then the great unknown, to be a passenger on such perilous journeys. I wondered, too, about the great contrast of sailing across a wild ocean and then entering the busy world of human commerce and exchange.

Writing a book is a challenging voyage in its own right. It’s not as physically perilous as crossing an uncharted ocean. But it’s a powerful learning experience. And there are times when you confront the great unknown. I write a book when I feel that I need to dig deep within myself to pull out what is at the edge of my awareness. It’s an exploration of inner space made public. You spend thousands of hours devoted to exploring ideas and experiences that you hope will be of wider interest. Despite your best plans and whatever structure you have in mind, there will be meandering paths, looping themes, and reiterative cycles of insight and frustration. You meld perennial learning (what it is you’ve always known) and adaptive learning (how to apply that knowledge to changing circumstances). You develop rational, sequential approaches, while you look for creative ways to express them. You improvise as necessary, while always returning home to the seminal questions that inform the work. Still, your ideas congeal and then decompose, reforming throughout the course of a lifetime. The learning process, like your memory, is forever unfolding.

So grab your purple crayon and use it well. Take the ideas in this book and carry them to new places. Use them to expand your thinking, to challenge yourself to challenge others. Delve into your own memories and experiences to allow the theoretical material to come alive. Stay home and observe the natural world. Use your animal senses. Discover your roots by learning about what’s right in front of you. Then you can stretch far and wide. Cross the stream so you can resonate with heaven.

Perpetual Reciprocity

Last summer I was browsing the shelves at Munro’s Books in Victoria, British Columbia. The stacks are neatly displayed amongst lovely, wooden tables in an elegant, stately building. I was reminded of the blissful hours I spent in Brentano’s mid-town Manhattan bookshop many decades ago. There’s a timeless quality about a classic bookshop.

The new, paperback version of Robert MacFarlane’s Landmarks was featured at the checkout counter. I’ve been slowly drifting away from traditional “nature writing” in recent years and at first glance I was deliberating whether to look inside the book. The cover and title were sufficiently appealing so I decided to flip through the pages. I was captured by Macfarlane’s mission—to collect as many landscape words as possible from the various languages of the British Isles. A random flip brought me to a section of words describing the water’s surface. And the first word I saw was “cuilbhean.” It’s a Gaelic term that describes a “cup-shaped whirl in a stream or eddy.

Landmarks is a taxonomy of several thousand words, organized according to the following sections—flatlands, uplands, water lands, coastlands, underlands, edge lands, earth lands, and woodlands. I started reading the lucid essays that connect these wonderful glossaries.

MacFarlane implores his readers: “We need now, urgently, a Counter Desecration Phrasebook that would comprehend the world—a glossary of enchantment for the whole earth, which would allow nature to talk back and should help us listen. A work of words that would encourage responsible place-making, that would keep us from slipping off into abstract space, and keep us from all that would follow such a slip.”

He explains that he was originally inspired to develop such a collection after noticing that a recent edition of the Oxford Dictionary for Children replaced numerous natural history related words with newer, trendy, tech-oriented words. MacFarlane seeks to redress that trend by resurrecting the extraordinary landscape lexicon that is now endangered. There’s a corollary, of course, between endangered species, threatened landscapes, and endangered landscape terms, and what concerns Macfarlane most is that we are losing the sensibility, beauty, local knowledge, descriptive natural history, and perceptual experience contained in these words. “And what is lost along with this literacy is something precious: A word magic, the power that certain terms possess to enchant our relations with nature and place.”

I was visiting Victoria while teaching a course, Developing Environmental Understanding, at nearby Royal Roads University. I brought the book back to class, enthusiastically showed it to the students, and began thinking about how I might use it in future classes. The extraordinary essays that connect the glossaries contain brilliant insights about environmental perception, and the entire package is an inspiration to deepen your understanding of place, natural history, and perceptual awareness, or what I describe in Bringing the Biosphere Home as “place-based perceptual ecology.” Each of MacFarlane’s glossaries is a lesson in perceptual ecology, describing glimpses, extraordinary events, ubiquitous moments, unusual patterns, or obvious relationships that are rarely described. Most importantly it’s impossible to read more than a few pages until you’re ready to go outside to observe, celebrate, and cultivate landscape awareness.

Macfarlane wisely avoids trite nostalgia by suggesting that “although place words are being lost, they are also being created. . . . We have forgotten 10,000 words for our landscape, but we will make 10,000 more given time.” What a great project for environmental learning in the Anthropocene!

A month later I was attending the Blue River Writers Gathering at the H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest, a fine weekend of conversation, musing, and wandering. There I met David Lukas, whose wonderful book, Language Making Nature does exactly what MacFarlane suggests. Lukas proposes a series of “alternative field guides,” approaches to environmental perception that allow people to bathe in the direct experience of species and landscapes. “I long to see a new generation of field guides that go behind pop art,” he says, “field guides that innovate and explore radically different traditions and styles as diverse as abstract expressionism or cubism in the city.”

In Language Making Nature, Lukas challenges readers to create their own words that express how they perceive the biosphere. Lukas provides readers with various ways to deconstruct, recreate, and reorganize language by breaking words down and then putting them back together again. He explores root forms, affixes, suffixes, word origins, the use of vowels and consonants, the use of older forms of words as taken from Old English, Anglo-Norman, French, Greek, and Latin. He provides an outline of English word formation, utilizing affixation, compounding, conversion, blending, clipping, and word manufacturing. And like any good field guide, there are many lists and examples to identify and then explore.

This is where the book moves from a set of instructions to educational inspiration. There are also sections that suggest topics for word creation, with some helpful suggestions for getting started. Short chapters on place-name elements, texture, rock, seeing color, states of mind, wind, clouds and species elaborate the possibilities. The essence of his project is neatly summarized in the section Four Ways to Create Original Words: “Borrow or repurpose old words or change them into new words. Add prefixes or suffixes to preexisting words. Convert a word to a new part of speech. Combine two or more words into a new compound word.” And then Lukas adds a dose of philosophical instruction:

Bring every word to life:
—know its roots
—place it carefully
—have it mean something

I spent much of October reading Language Making Nature, while spending time at my cottage in the New Hampshire woods. It was a glorious foliage season. I wondered if I could utilize the Lukas method to expand my perceptual awareness. One morning while reading Lukas a dragonfly landed on my shirt. It flew away and then returned, landing in the white pages of the book. I had several moments to observe it. After its departure I found my Stokes Beginner’s Guide to Dragonflies and identified it as a broad-winged meadowhawk. But then I thought—have I learned nothing? Give it your own name! And I realized what a poor observer I am, and that it would take much more experience before I could give the dragonfly a fitting name. Maybe I can give it many different names until one finally fits. Maybe I am caged by the language rules that I am familiar with and as Lukas suggests the only way to break away from the blinders of rule-fixed language is to develop my skills. So I temporarily named it a Monadnock meadowhawk, linking it to my place, and in honor of those people who have more experience than I in observing its behavior.

If I’m not quite ready to use words to describe new impressions, I thought I might get part way there by writing down impressions of phenomena that I had no single word for. So here’s my list of foliage impressions deserving of creative word or thought forms:

  • The pointillist granularity of countless spectral foliage arrangements.

  • How the wind and shadows cause movement and motion, deepening the vibrational color forms.

  • The changing hues of blue sky through the canopy shadows.

  • Multiple colors of leaves on the same tree.

  • The light of the sun reflecting differently off variably colored leaves.

  • Passing clouds over the bright canopy.

  • Yellow, orange, and red leaves falling like floating petals of rain.

  • How the forest floor becomes a more complex mosaic with each falling leaf.

  • A sequence of foliage arranged in the order of the spectrum.

  • The sound of insects on the last warm October day.

I may not have invented new words, but the spirit of the Lukas inquiry challenged me to observe more deeply.

I put my educator’s hat on. Why confine our observations to linguistic forms? Why not use icons, visual symbols, dance movements, graphic designs, musical notes, musical scale systems, musical instruments, or drumbeats and patterns, or other hybrid forms of communicating our observations of the biosphere?

Both MacFarlane and Lukas mention David Abram’s influence. His phenomenological approach to learning inspires a reawakening of sensuous experience. Looking deeply into language is merely a method. It’s the process that matters. He writes in Becoming Animal that “[w]hether sounded in the tongue, printed on the page, or shimmering on the screen, language’s primary gift is not to re-present the world around us, but to call ourselves into the vital presence of that world—and into deep and attentive presence with one another.” Abram refers to a compelling reciprocity of experience. What all three writers have in common is an understanding that the landscape speaks directly to us, the biosphere is what makes us whole, and there is a reciprocal sentience at play.

 

Amitav Ghosh, the great novelist, has a brilliant new book on climate change. The Great Derangement ponders the utter absence of literary work about climate change and the resulting great failure of insight and imagination. He assesses the origins and history of that failure, linking it to colonialism, imperialism, and the hubris of scientific reductionism. Those are familiar explanations. What makes Ghosh’s book of great interest is where he takes that assessment. Ghosh describes uncanny moments when natural processes overwhelm our everyday perceptions, the “moments of recognition, in which it dawns on us that the energy that surrounds us, flowing under our feet and through wires in our walls, animating our vehicles and illuminating our rooms, is an all-encompassing presence that may have its own purposes about which we know nothing.”

Is this the vital presence that Macfarlane, Lukas, and Abram all refer to? Yes it is. And Ghosh suggests that the manifestation of this presence “is one of the uncanniest effects of the Anthropocene, this renewed awareness of the elements of agency and consciousness that humans share with many other beings and perhaps even the planet itself.” Perhaps the Anthropocene (and all of the hubris suggested by its very name) reflects the planet reasserting itself, smacking humanity in the face, giving it one last chance to pay attention to the magnificent biosphere that dwarfs humanity’s ubiquitous and petty concerns. Ghosh reflects that the Anthropocene resists literary fiction because it cannot be explained by language alone, and “it would seem to follow that new, hybrid forms will emerge and the act of reading itself will change once again, as it has many times before.”

Ghosh understands that for pre-modern cultures, and for many existing cultures, this vital presence was crucial to their intrinsic ways of knowing. But it has been lost and abandoned by modernity. Macfarlane’s glossaries and Lukas’s word formations use the tools of language to resurrect this forgotten presence, and to do so as a partner to scientific inquiry. Lukas asks “why not take scientific terms and extend them with new metaphoric possibilities; for instance, try using hypothesize as a verb for the behavior of an animal, or photosynthesis as an expression for the work you do when you read a book?” And Macfarlane’s Counter Desecration Phrasebook as he imagines it “as thought-experiment, as baroque fantasia—would stand out not as a competitor to scientific knowledge and ecological analysis, but as their supplement and ally. We need to know how nature proceeds, of course, but we need also to keep wonder alive in our descriptions of it: to provide celebrations of not-quite-knowing, of mystification, of excess.”

All three writers and David Abram are proposing that we use language as a tool for transcendence, an open-ended conversation with species and landscapes, a perceptual immersion that transcends modernity, and leads to a deeper awareness, a vital presence, a reciprocal sentience with the biosphere. This is an explicit rejection of reductionism, an emergent vitalism, and a testimony to planetary creativity. Stuart Kauffman explores similar ground in his recent book, Humanity in a Creative Universe. Andreas Weber in The Biology of Wonder proposes a metamorphosis of science that is attuned to aliveness and feeling. Alison Deming’s Zoologies and Carl Safina’s Beyond Words are testimonies to animal spirit, feeling, and sentience. All of these books are wonderful guides for environmental learning in the Anthropocene. We look beyond ourselves. We peer deeply into other species, opening our hearts to what they have to teach us.

Anthropocene science brings us extraordinary capabilities—advanced technological sensory systems, complex theoretical formulations, networked science, and big data. These are astounding accomplishments and they provide us with magnificent tools for better understanding the biosphere. But they are useless without a parallel exploration of sentience, feeling, and perceptual reciprocity. MacFarlane and Lukas bring us back to basics, providing the hands-on language tools that help us link what we say and hear to what we perceive. They provide a simple foundation that allows us to penetrate the layers of complexity. They help us realize that every word is an ocean and every phrase embodies a landscape. The language we speak comes from the earth. It comes from the birds. It’s alive in every cell in our bodies. It is a direct path to a deeper awareness of the places we inhabit, and that is the foundation we need to better understand the complex global environmental changes that impact every community on the planet.

The Five Qualities

Andrea Wulf concludes her magnificent biography of Alexander von Humboldt by emphasizing his singular contribution to environmental learning: “we can only truly understand nature by using our imagination.” For Humboldt, “the imagination soothed the deep wounds that reason created.” Humboldt’s active imagination was stimulated by his extraordinary observational powers, his ability to synthesize information, his interpretive originality, his dynamic expressive approaches, and their manifestation as exemplified by both his scientific work and his outspoken critiques of colonialism and slavery. What is the 21st century version of this sequence—observation, information, interpretation, expression, manifestation?

In a previous essay, The Anthropocene Curriculum, I explore how Humboldt’s vision and his emphasis on the imagination provides inspiration for a 21st century approach to environmental learning. I outline a template for curricular design potentials covering Biosphere Studies, Urban Environments, The Ecological Imagination, Social Networking and Change Management, and Sustainability Life Skills. I’d like to propose a parallel template, but this time emphasizing the conceptual learning pathways, or qualities, that contribute to environmental learning.

I describe these learning pathways as qualities because they represent distinctive attributes. Each quality entails intrinsic learning processes. All of the qualities and learning processes are simultaneously enfolding and unfolding. They encompass each other while they reveal deepening insights. These qualities are interconnected and mutually reinforcing.

This is not an empirical theory, but rather an informal template, based on four decades of teaching and thinking about environmental learning. I offer this approach in the spirit of educational experimentation and improvisation. There are multiple ways to arrange these qualities. Nevertheless, I present them with some predispositions.

First, I’m intrigued by the dialectic between perennial qualities and adaptive considerations. A perennial quality represents an educational virtue that is consistent across cultural place and time. Environmental insights emerge in similar ways in a variety of cultural settings. Yet the context of learning is never the same. People, cultures, and organisms respond to changing circumstances. Hence learning is also adaptive. In the first decades of the 21st century, dynamic environmental change and the acceleration of information technologies are the context for adaptive learning.

Second, I don’t think educators spend sufficient time considering how people learn, especially in higher education. Most curricular controversies are substantive. How you learn is as important as what you learn. The skills of lifelong learning are typically internalized when you learn how to learn, and these skills receive insufficient reflective attention.

Third, ecological thinking embodies a paradigmatic shift in how we think about learning. That shift transcends interdisciplinarity per se. It assumes innovative approaches to how we engage as learning organisms in complex environments, how we see ourselves in the biosphere, and how we expand our concepts of place and time.

Fourth, I conceive organizational schemes as mandala sand paintings. You create a temporary order of symmetry, coherence, pattern, and meaning, and then you let it all dissipate and recreate it as necessary. Learning is a reflective blend of structure and improvisation, pattern and chaos, coherence and dissonance.

Fifth, the best way to think about any organizational scheme is to personalize it, using it as a way to explore how you learn, how you observe the way others learn, and by considering how learning is a reciprocal relationship between the self, culture, and the environment.

I encourage you to experiment with these qualities and rearrange them to suit your own purposes.

And now for the five qualities:

Observation

Observation emphasizes a broadened understanding of biosphere patterns, including the ability to design learning activities and research approaches that enhance perception of global environmental change, an understanding of the relationship between local and global, and the ability to move between spatial and temporal scales. Observation entails perception, identification, and pattern recognition. Perception is the development of sensory awareness, so as to apprehend movement, metabolism, pace and behavior. Identification allows an individual to enter the lifeworld (umwelt) of other organisms. Pattern Recognition is the ability to assimilate perception and identification by using scale to detect symmetry, cycles, waves, thresholds, interstices, flows, and species interactions. Information

Information describes the ability to gather data from a variety of sources, organize that data, assess its relevance and application, and understand how to use it effectively. Information entails sourcing, browsing, and networking. Sourcing involves understanding the origins of information, its dissemination, its transformation, and how it is manipulated or translated based on opinion and perspective. Browsing involves the survey of information, including scanning (seeing the breadth of the field), scaling (understanding its context), focus (knowing how to look more deeply), and granularity (finding its constituent pieces). Networking entails mapping information, tracing its routes and paths, determining its speed of transmission (mobility), and understanding who has access to it. An interesting way to conceive of information, and an approach that is facilitated by computer graphics, is the emerging field of information design and visualization. Information design uses the above concepts and develops visualization processes to enhance our understanding of them.

Interpretation

Interpretation is the challenge of generating meaning from observation and information. This includes constructing narrative, amplifying and articulating personal voice, and developing themes and approaches for communicating complex environmental issues. Interpretation entails synthesis, dissonance, and narrative. Synthesis is the ability to find coherent relationships within diverse fields of information while finding the essence of ideas and explanations. Dissonance reflects the tensions inherent in synthesis, the recognition of nonlinearity, different perspectives, and contrasting possibilities. Narrative is the ability to create arcs of unfolding meaning, embodying both synthesis and dissonance through the use of allegory, metaphor, and story. In the 21st century, electronic communications make new forms of narrative available and novel forms of expression possible, including the use of diverse media, and reliance on iconography, design, and virtual/visceral matrices, demanding innovative approaches to interpretation.

Expression

Expression is the ability to effectively communicate interpretive approaches by cultivating creative possibilities in venues such as storytelling and eloquence, writing and personal reflection, information design and display, artistic mapping, public art, soundscape design, animation and video, music and dance performance, game design, and other forms of iconography and representation. Expression entails imagination, improvisation, and activation. Imagination is a unique blend of creativity, visualization, and reflection, allowing the mind to form uninhibited images and possibilities by exploring the unconscious, and melding psyche with the biosphere. Improvisation is the ability to spontaneously respond to dynamic changes in the environment by adapting structures of knowledge to new contingencies, or playing with forms and ideas as they emerge. Activation is the application of imagination and improvisation through experimentation, innovation, and implementation. Electronic communications enable a spontaneity of response that can have wide (but not necessarily deep) impact in a short period of time. How can expression be simultaneously deep and wide, perennial and adaptive, structured and improvisational, active and reflective?

Manifestation

Manifestation refers to the generosity of interpretation and expression, applying narrative forms to enhance human flourishing in the biosphere. This includes an understanding of social and emotional intelligence, interspecies empathy, the ability to form collaborative connections and challenging learning communities in multiple cultural settings, the ability to engage in creative conflict, and the awareness to improvise in and adapt to diverse learning venues. Manifestation entails generosity, posterity, and flourishing. Generosity is the ability to demonstrate kindness, compassion, and respect in service to cultural community and ecosystem integrity. It encourages empathy, dialogue, connectedness, and love. Posterity requires awareness of past and future generations, the ability to act with respect for legacy and outcome, and to do so with an expansive time scale. If we combine posterity and empathy, we consider our actions in all of these contexts—intergenerational, multicultural, inter-species, urban/rural, local/global, and cosmopolitan. Flourishing is the ultimate goal of environmental learning, to create settings that allow for optimal human thriving in the dynamic biosphere. Flourishing promotes pleasure, virtue, equity, opportunity, collaboration, community, restoration, and reciprocation.

I realize this is a hefty list. Any of these qualities require elaboration and specification. They are most useful when placed in a substantive context. For example, these qualities can be neatly juxtaposed with the five curricular design potentials listed above. I’ll do so now:

Curricular Design Potentials: Biosphere Studies, Urban Environments, The Ecological Imagination, Social Networking and Change Management, Sustainability Life Skills.

The Five Qualities: Observation (Perception, Identification, Pattern Recognition), Information (Sourcing, Browsing, Networking), Interpretation (Synthesis, Dissonance, Narrative), Expression (Imagination, Improvisation, Activation), Manifestation (Generosity, Posterity, Flourishing).

It’s also helpful to juxtapose the curricular design potentials and the five qualities with the “new professions” I previously described—social entrepreneurs, media innovators, information analysts, infographic consultants, game designers, computer networkers, curators, graphic facilitators, planners, healing professionals, green retailers and marketers, street artists and performers, digital artists and photographers, and bloggers.

How do all of these possibilities help us conceive a new generation of environmental learning venues? What is the role of colleges and universities in taking bold educational initiatives? What support do we provide students, faculty, and administrators? How can trustees and other stakeholders be included in these initiatives? And how do we work with communities to better understand the dynamic environmental and conceptual changes of the Anthropocene?

In my next columns, I’ll move away from these abstract formulations, and provide some examples of on-the-ground projects, both in the classroom and in the community, that combine vision and practice and offer hope and solutions.

The Purple Crayon and The Fog Man

As a way to introduce my thinking about environmental learning, I’d like to share some of my most vivid childhood experiences. When I was five years old, my parents took me to the Hayden Planetarium in New York City. I was thrilled, daunted, overwhelmed, and inspired by the virtual trip into outer space. For a souvenir I asked if I could bring home Herbert Zim’s Golden Guide to the Stars. I spent hours flipping through that book. It taught me about scale, space, time, and all the possibilities on my horizon. It instilled a sense of wonder. It helped me locate the Earth. I realized that I lived on a planet!

I had another favorite book as well. I loved Crockett Johnson’s Harold and the Purple Crayon. As Harold wandered off to sleep he floated wherever his imagination would take him. His magic crayon enabled him to draw his reality. When he got lost and overwhelmed by the prospects of his imagination, he could find his way home by drawing the moon outside his bedroom window. His home place gave him the courage to explore the farther reaches of his imagination. I learned about the boundaries of home, and how I could use my imagination to travel through space and time.

Both books taught me a great deal (even as a five year old) about scale and the imagination. They also provided a glimpse into the wonderful world of books. To this day, I can endlessly wander through stacks of books, browsing their contents, synthesizing their meaning, exploring the various paths to insight and understanding. Over 60 years later I get immense pleasure from browsing my own library, an intellectual archive of my dreams, hopes, and aspirations. I savor the extraordinary variety of ideas sitting on those shelves. I get similar pleasure from browsing through other people’s libraries, glimpsing aspects of their intellectual lives.

At a young age, I learned to love the newspaper. I started with the sports page. It connected me to baseball games played in distant cities. I then migrated to the international news. As I got older I explored all of the other features of the paper. I learned how to scan the paper for stories of interest, and how to read between the lines. I began to understand that what wasn’t reported was also of importance. The daily newspaper taught me how to browse, surf, synthesize and interpret information.

Sixty years later, I still wander through the morning news, but now I do so by visiting various websites or discussion forums. The speed and access of my approach is greatly accelerated, but the basic principles of browsing, synthesizing, and curating is strikingly similar to the habits I learned reading the daily newspaper as a child.

There’s another great way to start the day and that is to observe the natural world. Many years later (the 1990s), I discovered a lovely essay, “Readings for Morning” by Joseph W. Meeker, the opening piece in his delightful book, Minding the Earth. Meeker suggests that “[i]t is too much to say that you are what you read in the morning, but it is a sure bet that you aren’t what you don’t. . . . It is worthwhile to pause for a moment and reflect upon the character of the Morning Reading pursued by each of us. . . . A good day in the life of a living system begins with recognition and affirmation of life.” Meeker reiterated the necessity of observational ecology as an educational practice.  

I have a darker memory, too. It started as a frolic but ended as a headache. In the 1950s, our suburban community regularly sprayed DDT in the neighborhood. A man would come in a small jeep and dispense a cloud of chemicals, resembling a misty fog. We called him “the fog man.” I remember running through “the fog,” delighted that I had access to the same clouds I observed in the sky. I soon realized that these fog adventures would typically result in a headache, and from then on I stayed away. In my adult years, as a 39-year-old and then more recently, I’ve had cancerous but encapsulated tumors removed from my body. I often wonder whether “the fog man” seeded these mutations. This experience taught me about cognitive dissonance.

In retrospect, some of my environmental learning came from listening to the stories of my parents and grandparents. My mother was born on a farm in Cyprus, a Jewish family that fled pogroms in Russia, only to be initially denied access to America. The family emigrated again when she was nine years old, arriving at a cold water flat in Brooklyn. My mother spoke three languages, but not English. She and my grandfather would tell stories of how much they enjoyed the farm, and how difficult it was to emigrate, even though they knew it would bring more opportunities for the family. I learned about migration, diaspora, and the importance of intergenerational experience. It’s a long way from a farm in Cyprus to the Hayden Planetarium and the Fog Man, but these memories help me understand how I came to learn about the natural world. They influenced my career as an environmental educator. I’ve used them as templates for dozens of teaching activities.

I’ll conclude this brief snapshot of vivid learning moments for now, although I would also like to stress that I could cite dozens of additional incidents and memories, and they would reveal many other forms of participation and engagement. And I know that you can, too! It’s instructive to trace how you learn through a lifetime, to see what’s changed, and to observe that the essence of how you learn is both perennial and adaptive. Harold and the Purple Crayon is just as meaningful today as it was in 1955. Yet I’m aware, too, that in these times, Harold is as likely to take his journey with an iPad app or a YouTube video.  

There is a perennial quality to these anecdotes. You can also travel through space and time, or learn about scale and perception by reading Rumi’s poetry. Artists, visionaries, mystics, and scientists use the imagination to explore scale. Harold just happened to use a purple crayon. And the dark shadow of the Fog Man lies close to so many communities. Consider London’s famous polluting fogs and all of the health damage they caused. For countless generations, families have told origin stories that help them understand where they come from and where they are going. There are extraordinary environmental narratives layered in those stories.

What I wish to convey is that how we engage in learning has a perennial substrate, both through the ages and over the course of a lifetime. Yet it’s essential to pay attention to the adaptive qualities of an active mind. The context and milieu of environmental learning is always changing. For example, shiny new technologies easily take over our lives, and in so doing they alter how we observe and what we perceive. Can we be mindful of how these technologies influence how we learn, and then how we interpret what we observe? I believe there is a somatic and evolutionary substrate that informs sensory perception, structures our imaginative capacities, and enables us to form concepts and ideas. How is that substrate enhanced or diminished in different learning environments? This is my overriding concern as I consider learning pathways intrinsic to the Anthropocene. How do we navigate the shifting templates of dynamic change and what are the conceptual pathways that best inform environmental learning?

Sherry Turkle’s most recent book, Reclaiming Conversation: The Power of Talk in a Digital Age, explores how social media is dramatically changing the very essence of how people engage in conversations. For example, when texting is ubiquitous, protocols emerge as to when it’s appropriate to make eye contact, how you divide your attention between virtual and visceral conversations, and how social bonding is both enhanced and diminished. This is just one example of countless studies that document how social media and other communication technologies significantly change how we think and learn. These technologies and their applications change so quickly that it’s increasingly difficult to keep up with the rapidly evolving protocols, let alone the changing conceptual dimensions of their use. In my view, the field is moving so quickly that we still don’t understand the long-term implications of social media, and I’m wary of trendy prognostications and catchy metaphors. Moreover, much of the research is culturally specific and based on relatively affluent users. 

However, just as the Anthropocene reflects accelerating environmental change, the same technological capacities that enable those changes are accompanied by accelerating conceptual changes. The challenge for environmental learning is how to understand the implications of both dynamic processes—environmental change has conceptual implications, and thus informs how we learn about the biosphere. I have written about this parallel process in Bringing the Biosphere Home: Learning to Perceive Global Environmental Change (The MIT Press, 2001). For example, I consider how the technologies of speed (both the Internet and the Interstate) dramatically alter how we perceive environmental change—pace is intrinsic to perception.

What’s the relationship between Harold’s purple crayon, the Fog Man, my mother’s emigration, and the accelerating technological changes of the Anthropocene? I think the best way to formulate an educational strategy is to carefully reflect on your own experience as a learner. There are many paths to environmental learning, depending on your age, your culture, your background, and your values. This includes varieties of developmental sequences, cognitive abilities, and multiple intelligences. Your path is an educational narrative, one strand in a collective narrative that yields more generalized insights. The very best educational approaches and curriculum find ways to weave between individual and collective experience, while also paying attention to what’s perennial and adaptive.

In the next section, I’ll propose a conceptual sequence for environmental learning in the Anthropocene. Similar to the adaptive curriculum I proposed in a previous column, this sequence is meant to be evocative, unfolding, and versatile, reflecting the fast-paced changes of our contemporary milieu. My hope is that this sequence will serve as a template for new approaches to educational delivery and assessment.
